Current Threat Level

The current threat level is assessed as SEVERE (as of 4th July 2007 - see threat level history for previous changes).

This means there is a high likelihood of future terrorist attacks and indicates an continuing high level of threat to the UK.

See The UK's threat level system for more information on what threat levels mean, who decides the level of threat and how the threat level system is used.

The Government continues to maintain a state of heightened readiness in response to the threat from international terrorism. It remains the Government's policy to issue warnings or advice if this ever became necessary to protect public safety in the event of a specific and credible terrorist threat.

The Threats

The UK faces a range of covert threats to its security. The background information available on these threats aims to put our security advice in context.

There is a serious and sustained threat from international terrorism to the UK and UK interests overseas. The current threat level is assessed as "Critical".

The most significant terrorist threat comes from Al Qaida and associated networks. Information on Al Qaida's typical methods of attack and targets and the current threat to the UK has been prepared by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC).

Northern Ireland-related terrorism continues to pose a threat. Dissident republican terrorist groups, who have rejected the Good Friday Agreement of April 1998, still aspire to mount attacks in Great Britain.
